This document has been written to help you to decide whether you would like to be informed of genetic information identified through research that may be relevant to you and/or your family members.
What is the chance you will find important genetic information that is relevant to me and/or my family members?
Most people DO NOT have important genetic information identified when they participate in research. A small number of people who participate in research will have important genetic information identified that may be relevant to them and/or their family.
The genetic information we are referring to is related to conditions where there is the potential for prevention, early detection and reducing the risk of the condition. Some people wish to know this information and some do not.
You can choose one of the following options:
- To be informed of the genetic information
- Not to be informed of the genetic information
What will happen if I want to know more about the information? (Option 1)
If we find important genetic information that may be relevant to you and/or your family members, we will advise you in writing and seek to confirm that you are still interested in being informed.
What will happen if I do not want to know more about the information? (Option 2)
We will NOT write to you if we find genetic information that may be relevant to you and/or your family members.
You might not get the potential health benefits from knowing this additional information.
Can I change my mind about being informed?
Yes. If you change your mind about being informed of your genetic information, you are welcome to contact the ABC Study team on 1800 688 419 (free call within Australia) or via email at info@abcstudy.com.au.
