Paid Focus Groups - Seeking opinions on giving research participants their genetic risk information for cancer

Focus Groups

As part of a research project led by the University of Melbourne, Monash University and Garvan Institute of Medical Research, we would like to hear your views about learning genomic risk results of developing breast and prostate cancer from a research study.

Study Outline

Breast and prostate cancer are the two most common cancers in Australia. The risk of developing these cancers can be influenced by differences in our DNA called genetic variants. Sometimes when participating in research, researchers may test donated genetic material and individuals may learn about their risk levels of developing these types of cancer.

We are exploring the best practices for returning genomic risk results for breast and prostate cancer, particularly resulting from research participation. We need your help to understand what people might value in how and if they would like to receive genomic risk results, as well as what concerns and questions people may have.

Anyone who meets the eligibility criteria below, can take part in this research:

  • Aged 18 years or older
  • Able to communicate in English
  • Able to provide consent via an online consent form
  • Willing to participate in discussion through an online platform e.g., zoom

This study is sponsored by the National Health and Medical Research Council and approved by the University of Melbourne Human Research Ethics Committee reference: 2024-26030-50945-10.

Applications for recruitment close: 8/11/2024

What’s involved

You will be invited to take part in online focus groups to share your ideas and opinions on:

What matters to people when they think about how they receive genomic risk results for breast and prostate cancer from a research study.

It is expected that each focus group will take 1-1.5 hours.

Benefits

If you are involved in the focus group discussions you will receive a $75 voucher at the end of the study.
